A small bird; 11-12 cm TL; 10-16 g; sexes are alike in appearance. Head and neck: Head, nape, throat and breast black; eye dark brown; bill light grey.

Body: upper back (mantle) black; overall dark reddish brown; center of abdomen black.

Limbs and tail: Legs and feet grey; tail dark brown; undertail coverts black.
