Head and neck: Nape and throat black; face and cheek red (male);

Body: Overall strikingly black and white; upper body white with streaks on back and wing coverts; neck, breast, and throat bluish black (male). Female mainly reddish brown or dark brown with light brown markings above, variable from brown, white with streaks and black below depending on subspecies (female).

Limbs and tail: Legs and feet red; tail long white above, below with black streaks (male).
