Head and neck:
small head terminating in a cylindrical snout; eyes small but well-developed; external ear canal is well-disguised by hair and opens as a vertical slit; may or may not have pale fur on head

Body:
Medium-sized, highly variable in color and density of its fur; dark brown to black; dorsal body and sides covered by long quills; quill color from almost entirely white, black with a white tip, or almost entirely black.

Limbs and tail:
Legs and feet are stout; five clawed digits on forelimbs; four on hindlimbs, claws well-developed and flattened; all males and some females possess spurs on the medial part of tarsus.
