Southern cassowary
Casuarius casuarius


A large flightless bird; 130-170 cm TL; 29-58 kg. Head and neck: Almost bare head and neck bright blue, but color changes depending on mood; prominent laterally compressed casque brown; wattles and back of the neck red; wattles usually two which can be used to distinguish from Northern Cassowary; rarely 1 or 3 wattles.

Body: Body greyish black, wings greatly reduced.


Limbs and tail: Feet with 3 toes. Legs powerful and long; legs and feet grey; tail very short, black.
