A medium owl; 23-28 cm TL; 200-310 g; occurs in greyish brown and reddish brown morphs. Head and neck: Face greyish brown or reddish brown; ear tufts present; whitish V-shaped eyebrows; eye yellowish brown or orange brown; bill light brown.

Body: Above greyish brown with black barring; primaries with white bars breast and abdomen light brown.;

Limbs and tail: Legs and feet dull white to light greyish yellow; tail short, greyish brown.
