A small accipiter with broader and more rounded wings and shorter tail than A. soloensis; 23-30 cm TL. Head and neck:
Dark grey (male) or brown (female); ear covert is lighter color; eye reddish orange (male) or yellowish orange (female); cere and skin around eye greenish yellow; throat white.

Body: Dark grey or brown; breast and abdomen pale brown with faint barring.

Limbs and tail:
Legs and feet yellow; tail with four broad bars.
