Head amd neck:
Head is large, round anteriorly (front) and broad posteriorly (back); upper and lower jaws robust; two pairs of prefrontal scales

Body:
Carapace -moderately broad; thickened area of the carapace above the base of the tail (at the 5th vertebral scute); serrated towards the back; typically have 5-6 pairs of costal scutes, the first (anterior) pair the smallest; the nuchal scale abuts the first lateral as well as the first vertebral scutes
Plastron - three inframarginals on each side

Limbs and tail:
Front flippers relatively short compared to other species; two claws on each flipper.
