Sexes are alike in appearance. Head and neck: Forehead and crown grey; lore and eyering purplish black; nape with narrow metallic green band followed by broad purple band; side of neck grey and iridescent purple/green; throat white; eye blue (male), purple or greyish purple (female); orbital skin grey; bill black

Body: Plump in appearance; back and rump dark grey; lesser wing coverts dark bluish grey; median and greater wing coverts grey with broad bluish dark grey tips forming 3 wing bars; breast white with hair-like, large orange red breast spot; abdomen white with grey wash; undertail coverts white washed with pinkish orange.

Limbs and tail: Legs and feet red to maroon; tail short; grey.
