Razor-backed musk tirtle
Sternotherus carinatus


Head and neck:
Head is moderate in size; no white stropes on head (vs. present on S. odoratus); barbels on chin and throat; top of the head and snout are light brown to grey with numerous spots; upper jaw with black streaks.

Body:
Carapace - very prominent vertebral keel; high domed; as tall as wide; center has a prominent keel; scutes overlap one another at their back edges; 11 marginal scutes on each sideof the nuchal scute; light brown to brownish orange, with a series of thin dark streaks; seams black.

Plastron - gular scute is absent; reduced and weakly hinged; the pectoral scutes are rhomboid in shape; plastron is an immaculate light yellow.
Limbs and tail:
Limbs are grey with small dark spots. tail is short.
