Head and Neck: Spots behind the eye to neck are yellow, orange or red; notch on the upper jaw.

Body:
Carapace - scutes between male and female make them almost look like different species; elongated and flat on males, round and domed in females; a prominent keel runs along vertebral scutes, lighter in color than the scutes; marginal scutes in adults are almost blunt towards the front and serated at back; color varies from light to dark brown. Plastron - yellow to brown with dark radiating lines along the length of the top suture; the radiating pattern fades with age and plastral scutes become uniformly yellowish brown.

Limbs and tail:
Cone-shaped scales on the back side of hindlegs and at the tip of the tail; scales on forelegs are reddish brown; half of the digits on the feet are fused; tail is short.
