A large flightless bird from Africa; 175-275 cm in height; can weight more than 150 kg; unmistakable. Head and neck: Head relatively small; neck very long; head and neck grey (male), red (male, breeding color), greyish brown (female); eye brownish orange; bill grey.

Body: Overall black (male), greyish brown (female); primaries white (male).

Limbs and tail: Thigh bare skin grey or pink (male), greyish pink (female); tail white; legs and feet grey with pink scales; 2 toes, inner larger.
