A medium, stocky and short-necked heron; 56-65 cm TL; 1000 g; sexes are alike in appearance. Head and neck: Forehead and line above eye white; crown and nape black with green gloss; eye red; skin around eye yellowish green; bill black; throat white.

Body: Upper body black; side of head and wing grey; breast and abdomen white.

Limbs and tail: Legs and feet yellowish green or yellowish orange; tail short, white.
